Air Starter Tip of the Month – What do those long part numbers mean?

Air starters tend to have long part numbers that don’t always make much sense, especially when it comes time to replace it. When it’s time to order a new starter it’s important that you use the complete and accurate replacement number. Sometimes just one number out of sequence, or an incorrect number can causethe wrong replacement starter to arrive at your engine site. For instance; a common starter number like SS815FGB03R31 can appear very similar to another model number like the SS810FGB03R31. The difference between the “5″ and the “0″ is a huge difference in the starter models. The SS815FGB03R31 is a pre-engaged drive system and the SS810FGB03R31 is an inertia drive system. Each number or letter carries a very specific meaning. It difficult for material manager or engine technicians to keep up with the meanings of all these number. That’s where ASC technical service people can step in to help. So the next time you're a little uncertain, call us at 800-999-7315 and together we'll solve any mystery.

Air Starter Tip of the Month – Supply lines and starter performance

If an air starter air or gas supply line must be longer than 20 feet, it is suggested that the inlet supply line be increased to 2 inches in diameter to ensure proper performance of large HP air starters. Both turbine and vane air starters are sensitive to flow restrictions. Operators should pay close attention to the use of uniform hose, pipe and other fittings for supply line connections. Tees, elbows, restrictions and line length should be kept to a minimum. Air strainers are not usually required, however, in dirty environments the use #40 mesh Y-strainers have shown to be effective in maintaining performance. Regular cleaning or replacement of mesh filters is highly suggested. Vane and turbine air starters can tolerant some debris such as oil mist, fine particulates or water mist in the air line, however over time, these contaminates will likely degrade air starter performance, cause a power loss and shorten the life of the starter.

Air Starter Tip of the Month

AIR STARTER LUBRICATION: Did you know that all vane type air starters should have a lubricator installed to insure long-life and maximum performance? Lubricators give the moving parts a needed friction barrier, reduce metal corrosion and keep vanes sealed properly against the cylinder walls. Even the so-called lube-free air starters require lubrication to prolong trouble free life. Two basic lubricator devices are typically employed. One is a IN-LINE or reservoir type that typically stores up to 2 quarts of lubricant, and is installed along the air supply line. The second style of lubricator is a small ONE SHOT device that dispenses a measured amount of lubricant every time the starter is engaged. Installed directly onto the air inlet of the starter, the in-line lubricators are self priming pneumatic pumps that require a 1/4″ lubrication line piped from as far away as 4 feet. Air Starter lubricators perform best using misting type, non-detergent oils such as diesel fuel or Marvel Mystery oil. If emissions are a concern, there are environmentally friendly type lubricants available on the market.

Not all air starters require lubrication. Turbine type air starters do not require air motor lubrication, although some turbine air starters do use an oil filled transmission that may require periodic inspections and maintenance.
